Our fabulous and talented Jam has been confirmed pregnant via ultrasound and is due December 18th. Chaz is a Best in Futurity winner (2011) and was also Best in Maturity at the 2012 WCA National Specialty. He is a proven producer of champions and multiple Best of Breed winners but most importantly, has passed on his amazing temperament and good health. All health clearances have been completed with passing grades for both Jam and Chaz, with CHIC numbers received.

I have had the pleasure of spending a great deal of time with Chaz, at both dog shows and as a guest at his home, with his mother and daughter, all with wonderful temperaments. Chaz is friendly, sweet and although has not competed or trained in performance venues, is biddable and smart. Chaz has a gorgeous front assembly and typey build and we are hopeful that with Jam, will produce beautiful puppies. Puppies from Jam's first two litters are already making their mark in the show ring, with major wins, at hunt tests earning JH legs, a tracking title, and training for agility.

We have decided to call this our Holiday Litter. Not only will they be born during the Jewish celebration of Hannukah and a week before Christmas but the theme and puppy AKC registered names will be based on Madonna songs, one of our favorite artists, whose hit song Holiday is a classic. In July, we went on our 2014 Grayhart Southern Adventure with Jam and Presley! This included the Greenville, SC dog show circuit, visiting Debbie Moody, who owns two Grayhart girls, in the stunning mountains of North Carolina and a quick trip to Alabama to visit UofA.

The first day of the Greenville Circuit was the Piedmont Kennel Club show. We were thrilled for Jam, the only owner-breeder-handler in a very competitive entry of Weims, to go Select Bitch for a 4-pt Grand Champion (GCH) Major and be awarded Best of Breed Owner-Handler. Jam, who is sparingly specialed, she's been busy with agility, pups and many other things, only needed two singles to finish her GCH title so finishing in a big way was tons of fun. Jam also was eligible to compete in the Owner-Handler group and showed well, photo above. Hard to believe this beauty has had two litters and is six years old.

Jam is the first Grand Champion in her litter and the second Grayhart dog to earn this title, with Bravo being the first.

Very proud to announce...Jam is now GCH Grayhart's Purple Haze,CD,JH,AX,AXJ,SD,VX!!!

What's up next for Jam? She will be competing in some local agility trials and will be bred on her next season for her final litter.Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01949013889319586242noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126855015601425216.post-21649362000786751552013-11-28T06:03:00.000-08:002013-11-28T06:03:08.969-08:00Jam is ready to pop!

Jam is due to have her puppies this week! She has lost her girlish figure and is full of pups. A big contrast to how she looked at her last modeling gig for Nordstrom's showing off Burberry watches, before she went on maternity leave.
The long awaited Pet Partners Promotional Video has finally been released. The video is featured on the Pet Partners website.

Jam and I were honored to be included in the filming of this video. This is a great introduction to their Therapy Animal Program. The video features several teams, including us, from around the country visiting various facilities. The last segment tells the story of a little girl and how a therapy dog saved her life is extremely touching and will bring you to tears.Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01949013889319586242noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3126855015601425216.post-41348202549078395762013-02-24T17:18:00.000-08:002013-03-01T17:18:39.208-08:00Rockland Show Weekend
The beautiful, athletic Vizsla is not exactly what one would expect from a show dog — those incredibly, well, un-doglike animals who pose pristinely and rarely bark, drool, jump, roll, chase tails or get easily distracted by anyone nearby. He is not aloof and doesn't seem particularly well-trained.
But Kiwi is a show dog and not just any show dog. He's a champion of his breed and one of at least three Bergen County dogs that will compete at the 137th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show next week. Kiwi will be joined byUpper Saddle River's Jam, a Weimaraner owned by Linda Hartheimer, and Carlstadt's CC, a Cardigan Welsh corgi whose owner and handler is Heather Masch.
Kiwi's obvious zest for life at home is fine with owner Steve Pasch, who never wanted a show dog anyway. Pasch just wanted a pet when he was looking for a puppy in the spring of 2010. Specifically, he wanted a Vizsla, the same kind of dog he had since 1984. So Pasch found himself in Connecticut looking at eight or nine puppies. He immediately locked his gaze on one.
Any one but that one, Pasch was told. But he couldn't choose another, so the breeder presented Pasch with an option — take any other puppy or take Kiwi (who was then known as Wellington) and sign a contract agreeing to train, show and breed this pick of the litter.
"I was not looking forward to the training and the nonsense, but I fell in love with that dog and I agreed," said Pasch.
Next week, the Allendale resident will be at the preeminent dog show in the country and he promises Kiwi behaves better with his handler. There are nearly 2,700 dogs that will compete at Westminster.
Despite their seemingly impressive credentials, Kiwi, Jam and CC are not considered favorites to win it all. Their owners don't spend hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on competitions, crisscrossing the country to follow judges, amass points and collect wins at large shows. This is a hobby for the local entries, but there is always hope. Long-shots have taken the coveted Best in Show in the past.
"It happens," said show chairman Thomas Bradley, who admits it's doesn't happen often.
Pasch, Hartheimer and Masch, though, aren't clearing their schedules for the winning dog's morning talk show circuit on Wednesday. They are there for the experience, the love of their dogs. These very different people share that love of dogs, loyalty to their breeds and time commitment to canine competition.
"Some people play golf, I do dog stuff," said Hartheimer, a special education teacher inLeonia who has three Weimaraners and also trains them as therapy dogs and for agility competitions. Jam — Champion Grayhart's Purple Haze — is even a model. Perhaps, you recognize her expressive eyes from a Ralph Lauren, Macy's or Longchamps ad or her pre-Westminster spot on "Fox and Friends" this week.

The training

Masch spends three to four hours a night walking, training and grooming her five playful corgis, after coming home from her full-time office job at a local pet company.
Pasch, who is retired, mostly passes the training responsibilities to handler Michelle Porfido of Long Island, but his weekends and much of his life have become wrapped up in the show dog world. It was not his plan, to say the least, but he does not regret signing that contract.
"Kiwi is really something special, besides the showing part," said Pasch, who has owned dogs for almost 50 years. "This is the best one I've ever had. This dog is like a Velcro dog. It's always by my side. … He senses if I'm down or blue, he comes over and picks me up."
When it comes to "the showing part," Kiwi — officially known as Champion Szizlin Kiwi Pasch — is something special too, as a dining room table full of ribbons and certificates illustrates. Pasch is excited to see what Kiwi will do at Westminster.

Splitting up the show

In past years, the entire show was held at Madison Square Garden. This year, the competition is being held in two locations. The breed competitions and benching during the day will be held at Piers 92/94. Dogs who win their breed move onto the group competition in the evenings at the Garden and group winners are up for Best in Show on Tuesday night. Jam and Kiwi's breeds are both in the Sporting Group. Corgis, like CC, are part of the Herding Group.
Also new this year, the inclusion of the Treeing Walker coonhound and the Russell terrier, as well as the naming of a "Reserve Best in Show" (presumably in case the Best in Show winner can't fulfill his duties as champion or is found to have a scandalous past).
This move to the Piers certainly takes a little of the special feel away from the prestigious competition. Part of the allure is the famous venue, but the Piers location is supposed to give competitors, spectators and vendors more room, particularly in the benching area, which lost space during recent arena renovations.

Teaching about dogs

At Westminster, the public is allowed — and encouraged — to visit the benching area, where dogs stay before and after competition, to meet the dogs and ask questions about the breeds. Spectators should expect honest answers — even if it means learning that a desired breed is not really for their family.
"That's kind of the idea," said Bradley. "Not all dogs are for kids. Not all kids are for dogs."
Hartheimer and Masch enjoy educating people about their dogs. It will be Hartheimer's biggest responsibility of the day, as she's handing over the leash to a friend who has also shown Jam in the past.
"He's an excellent handler and I'm a little nervous," said Hartheimer, who has also handled Jam at shows. "I think he does a better job with her than I do. It's about the dog, not me, and I want her to shine."
Either way, it will be a nerve-wracking day for owner and dog.
"Westminster has this energy that's not like other shows," said Masch, whose CC came from Poland and is officially known as Cool Sensation z Domu Polanki. "The dog really has to be a really stable, well-rounded, even-temperament dog to handle that, because it's very stressful. Even the best dogs will still get nervous."
Owners and handlers who are Westminster rookies have little chance at staying calm.
"You never think you're going to get there and when you're there with your dog, it's almost overwhelming," said Masch. "Then that wave of panic eases when you show the dog and it's over and you sit at the benches the rest of the day."
Email: yoriok@northjersey.com

The puppies received their first toy, a soft, multi-color octopus! The pups continue to gain weight and now look more like miniature Weims than guinea pigs. All their eyes are now open in varying degrees but we are keeping the lights low and have banned flash photography for a few days to protect their developing eyes. We are doing the best we can to take pictures of the pups without using a flash. Their vision however, is not very sharp but don't worry by day 18 or so, they will be able to focus on objects and people. Very young Weimaraner puppies have striking blue eyes. As the pups mature, their eye color changes to shades of light amber, gray, or blue-gray.

They still nurse aggressively, vying for the best spot at the milk bar. The puppies' eyes have begun to open, so we have banned flash photography for awhile. Even though their eyes are starting to open, they cannot see clearly yet and still bump into each other in the whelping box as they wander around.

With open eyes, these pups have such character in their beautiful faces and it is difficult to not want to just cuddle them all day long!

The Rockstars also had a special visitor today, our good friend, Lilly, who owns relatives of our Weims. She was a super help, holding the pups while I clipped their nails with a children's size nail clipper. After their mani/pedis, the pups got lots of hugs and kisses!

Part of the Rockstars daily routine is getting weighed. We use a digital postal scale and for now, a bowl until they outgrow it and then a tray. We weighed them at birth and will continue daily weighing for the first two to three weeks and then switch to weekly weigh-ins. By charting their weight, we can be sure the pups are eating enough or if there is a problem.

Developed by the U.S. Military, the Bio-Sensor method is a series of exercises performed on puppies starting at day 3 and ending on day 16.
It is important not to perform each exercise more than once per day or for increased amounts of time as it could over stress the puppies. These exercises would not occur naturally during this time frame and work by requiring the pup's neurological system to kick in earlier than normal.Studies have shown that Bio-Sensor puppies have:

Life has been busy, at work and home with the pups. The pups are downright adorable and it is amazing to see how they change daily, losing their stripes, gaining weight and touring the whelping box.

For those that think that breeding is an easy, money making measure, you couldn't be more wrong. Breeders like myself spend much time and money in planning and making a litter happen. Sometimes breedings do not take and you are out money spent on reproductive testing and procedures. Other times, you can have a healthy litter with no problems. Or, sadly, puppies are born dead or die within days as mother nature can be cruel. After our pups are whelped, great care is taken into ensuring that they continue to thrive. Part of the daily routine includes weighing them and charting their growth. Charting their weights is critical in monitoring their health and if a pups is not gaining or worse, continuously losing weight, then lifesaving measures are needed. One of our girls has not been doing well, not able to nurse and losing weight becoming dehydrated. We have been tube feeding her every two hours round the clock and administering an antibiotic. She seems minimally better but the odds are not with her. We pray she will make it and are devoted to trying what we can. The next few days will be difficult and telling. If she improves, she will likely grow up to be a normal healthy dog. The alternative is heartbreaking. Breeding is not for the faint of heart...
